After Daxter decided to freeze, puke and corrupt my save file, I was not exactly excited to fire it back up and replay the first half of the game again. So I decided to start the second game in on a series that I've really wanted to get into but for one reason or another I had always put it off.
Close to the end of the end of the PS2 cycle, I read about a game call Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3. The more I read about it, the more interested I became. I began doing a bit more looking into the series and found that the Persona games were a sub-series of the Shin Megami Tensei series. I found that there were a whole slew of games that I needed to experience so then the collector in me kicked in and I began looking for all the SMT games I could find. Eventually I had them all, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, and finally Persona 3 right when it released.

The Vita library grows...
So I picked up a Vita in preparation for the release of Assassin's Creed: Liberation (game on hold due to save game bug), and in the short time I've had it, I have picked up 6 games for it. I gotta say, I really like this handheld. As much I loved my PSP (which until the release of the PSV, was my favorite handheld) I have to say that the Vita is looking to easily be the king. Compare that to the 3DS, which only has a handful of games that I want (Kingdom Hearts: DDD, the upcoming Etrian Odyssey, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and the obligatory Mario games) the system seems to be really solid.
I added Mortal Kombat today (and it looks to be a great title and seems to fit really nice on the Vita) which take me to a total of 6 Vita titles.
So far I've only beaten one game on it, Uncharted: Golden Abyss which was not only a great game but also a great entry in the series. Looked great, played great and felt right at home on the handheld.
Which brings me to my final point and why I like the Vita so much. As much as I loved the PSP, it seemed that quite frequently when playing a game, on it, I would think, "This would be so much better with dual analogs and on a big screen. As I played through Uncharted: Golden Abyss, my thought was always, "This game feels right at home!" I didn't want, or need it on the big screen. The games on the Vita, feel like they belong there. And that's why I love my Vita.

New PS1!!!
I bought a new PS1 yesterday cause my old one died. Only $5 for the original. They guy at the store actually filled out a warranty card on it, because they warranty any used console for 30 days. Felt kinda old filling out a warranty card for a $5 dollar item. I mean that's just a couple of bean burritos and X-Large Baja Blast at Taco Bell. Oh well can't hurt I guess.
Now I can start working on my PS1 backlog again. Yes I know I can play them on my PS2 or PS3 but I'm kind of a purest when it comes to that stuff. I like to play the game on the original console if I can.

Sidebar update, it's all Raptr
Small update, the sidebar used to have my PSN, Xbox and Xfire gamecards. But I decided to change that. I've started using Raptr, and I like it. So now I'm using that to power my last played gaming info. Hopefully it will work well. We'll see.
Oh and I added a link to my book collection should you care to take a peek at what a guy like me reads.

Why do so many gamers think used games are bad?
As you may or may not know, there's rumors out there that the next generation of consoles will actually lockout used games.
Yes, that's right, you would not be able to purchase a used game and use it on your console without paying a fee to unlock the content.
Lame.
I have never understood this whole rant by developer/publishers that they are getting cheated out of their hard earned money, because of used game sales.
I bought a book once. When I was done with it, I sold it. I transferred those rights of ownership to someone else. I owned it, so I had the right to transfer that ownership to whomever I wanted (in this case someone who offered me the right amount of money). This isn't a new concept. It's called First-sale doctrine, and was established about 100 years ago by the lovely supreme court.
Basically the idea is that as the owner of a legally obtained copy of copyrighted material, I can transfer that ownership to anyone I want. So, if I by a book at Barnes & Noble (the book representing the legally obtained copyrighted material); once I am done with it, I can sell it, give it away, throw it away or whatever as long as I transfer the legally obtained object itself, in this case the book. Meaning that I could not buy the book, and sell a photocopy as the photocopy was not an authorized copy. Like used books, when I buy a video game, I just obtained a legal copy of copyrighted material. When I am done with the material should I so desire, I can go to GameStop or eBay or wherever and sell the legally obtained object.
As I stated before, this isn't new. First-sale doctrine has been around for over 100 years (Bobbs-Merrill Co. v. Straus in 1908) and as a result we have used bookstores all over the country.
But the greedy game publisher has decided that they aren't making enough and the looked at those used game sales and started complaining. And the sad thing is, some of you gamers are buying into this crap. Does it ever occur to you that if the publisher lowered the new game price, they would sell more copies? I've actually heard pubs and devs say that the high prices are because of the used game market.
What?!?
Last time I checked, basic economics teaches us that used prices help keep the new prices down.
Any time a lower cost alternatives (in this case, used games) is available it presents a challenge to the higher priced item (new games). Simple, so as a publisher, if I wanted to make more people buy my product new I have one very obvious solution. I simply lower the price of the new item. This makes the cost of entry for all involved cheaper and will force the alternative market (used games) to react by lowering their prices as well (and in turn lowering the return value price if I sell it back) making the new product more attractive. In the end, by lowering prices, I would sell more new copies.
But instead, the game publishers have decided that they want to whine and cry and stamp their feet and tell us how unfair it is that the evil GameStop has taken their money and their poor starving children with no shoes and the out of work developer and the time standing still while the world crashes in upon us...phew!
And the gamers bought it. It worked. I see gamers arguing for the publisher and against GameStop. It's insane.
If I was a home builder, and all of the sudden I starting putting out marketing materials and press releases and sound bytes saying that's horrible that these people are selling their home to someone else. I built that and now I don't see a penny of that resale. Oh whoa is me! Or an auto manufacturer, or a furniture manufacturer or whatever. If they did that, we'd all laugh and think they were nuts.
But it's okay for the game publisher.
I just don't get it.

KOTOR > ME
So I'm playing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and I really like it. But you know what pains me? To know that BioWare goes from making great games like KOTOR (and before that Baldur's Gate) to Mass Effect 2. Why, oh why didn't they leave the RPG elements in. Why did they feel the need to 'streamline' it? So, I played it and found that Mass Effect was actually okay regardless (BioWare called it an RPG, but it really wasn't). Yes it was streamlined but it was still a good story. And so I enjoyed Mass Effect (even though BioWare was slandering every other good RPG in the market) and let the RPG monikor slide. Through the course of the game I visited several planets, met lots of aliens (and even recruited them along the way) and had an over all good time.

2012, The Year of the RPG
So the past few years I had set some rather lofty goals in terms of gaming. Last year, for example, I set a goal to beat 50 games. That took some serious game time to pull off.
For 2012, I'm going a different direction. This year, it won't be about quantity at all. Out of necessity, in order to meet the target number in 2011, I deliberately avoided RPGs. This year however, I think it's going to be all about RPGs.

DuncanR2N's Awesome Gaming Memories for 2011
When I started to work on my 2011 GOTY post, I started to realize that I don't really like boiling down my gameplay into a single set of games and then pronouncing that one game is definitively better than another.
So I decided to go a different route and I came up with my top 10 favorite moments in gaming for 2011. This could be a single event in a single game or an overarching feeling from a set of games. Basically, there are no rules which gives me a bit more freedom to talk about the highlights of 2011, which I shall dub, the DAGMs (Duncan's Awesome Gaming Memories)

The Invasion of the Black Phantom
So today while playing Demon's Souls, I had my first PvP experience and let me tell you it was quite exhilirating. I'm not a writer, and have never claimed to be, but here is the tale of my fight against the invading Black Phantom.
And yes, I am a nerd.

2011: The final tally
2011 is done!
Time for the Final Tally:
Here's the overall count of games owned. Note that this is games not discs or carts or whatever, so a compilation that is on a single disc but has 4 different games will count as 4.
The numbers above are kinda skewed, I made some decisions on the Backloggery to null duplicate titles as well as going through an audit that added quite a few missing games so while the total growth is 420, I really didn't go out and buy that many games.
Late in the year, the Backloggery added the ability to further breakdown the titles by adding the Unplayed () designation to your games. So that 1515 consists of 1278 and 237 .
In total I beat/completed 59 games, 9 more than my goal for this year.
Here's the breakdown of the 59 titles by platform:

As for my goals this year, I think I did okay.
- Beat or Complete 50 games. I beat 59, so yeah, mark this one done.
- For every 3 games I acquire, I must beat 1 game. I tried to make this one a bit more reasonable but well, I failed. I collect too much.
- Finish a Zelda game. Yes, I finally have played and beat a Zelda game. I played The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and it was really good!
- Clean up PC titles. I'm gonna call this one done. I went through the backloggery recently and cleaned up all the PC games so I'll call it good.
- Beat all my SNES titles. Yeah, not even close. I beat 1, and picked up 2 so net, I'm in the hole.
Until next time...
